When is it appropriate to use high beam headlights?

High beam headlights are designed to provide greater visibility when driving in low-light conditions, particularly in rural areas where there is little to no ambient light and minimal traffic. Using high beams in these situations allows drivers to see further down the road and detect any obstacles or hazards that may be present. This increased visibility is especially helpful when there are no oncoming vehicles, as it does not create glare for other drivers.

In contrast, using high beams in heavy traffic can be blinding to other drivers, which is why it is considered inappropriate. During bad weather conditions, such as rain, fog, or snow, high beams can reflect off the precipitation and create a bright glare that makes it harder to see. Additionally, in city driving, streetlights and other illuminated signs provide enough visibility that high beams are not necessary and can also be disruptive to other drivers.
